My Story and Mission: Capturing the Joy in Sports
From the moment I first picked up a camera, I knew it was going to change the trajectory of my life. I instantly fell in love with the art of capturing images, and I dedicated every spare minute I had to honing my craft. At first, I took a lot of bad photos—shots I’m often embarrassed to show anyone—but through persistence, my photography improved. As my images began to gain attention, I felt proud, but something still felt missing.
After working every Saturday for two years in high school, I saved enough money to buy my first professional camera. With this new tool in hand and a world of possibilities ahead, I set out to explore. One day, I stumbled upon a group of kids playing football in a local park. Mustering the courage, I asked their parents if I could take pictures of their kids, and they agreed. I spent 30 minutes photographing them, and one of the boys came up to me, asking to see the photos. I’ll never forget the look on his face—pure joy and excitement—as he saw himself in the picture. It was one of the most genuine moments of happiness I’ve ever witnessed.
That experience shifted something inside me. I realized I could use my passion to capture the joy of sports, particularly youth sports. I started making short videos of local youth teams, and parents began asking how much it would cost for the footage. I was puzzled—I had never thought to charge for something I loved doing so much. My quick response was that it was completely free of charge. Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to making these videos for families who might not otherwise have access to high-quality video production.
Now, as a Junior at Southern Methodist University, I’ve set my sights on a bigger mission: to showcase the love and joy for sports through my videos. My goal is simple: I want every kid I film to feel like a professional athlete. I want them to be able to share their video with friends and family, to feel proud of themselves and their achievements. If I can bring that sense of pride and excitement to just one child, I consider my work a success.
To keep my little operation running, I’ve opened it up for donations. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, helps me continue creating these videos. The funds go toward covering gas, editing software, and eventually upgrading my equipment so I can make even better content for the kids and their families.
Thank you all for your continued love and support—it truly means the world to me.
Sincerely,
Oliver Vilkin
